Summary In this episode, I chat with Meaghan Kennedy, piñata artist and piñata workshop facilitator. Meaghan dishes on piñata-making as an art and a business that allows her to have fun, let loose, and engage with others in meaningful conversation. In her bubbly way, Meaghan shares why and how: her natural chattiness and positive outlook have helped sustain her through some difficult times, piñatas have made room in her life to be creative and cathartic, people never want to smash their piñatas and why they enjoy it so much when they do, and politics and piñatas can share the same space. Highlights On her purpose: I’m absolutely head over heels in love with piñata-making. I want to do one workshop a month…to get people together in their communities and, using piñatas as a catalyst, to get people together and talk to each other. I think that is the way that change happens. ________________________________________________________________________ On discomfort/fear: The unknown is terrifying. Just try something…I knew that unless I tried it, I wouldn’t ever be what I wanted to be. ________________________________________________________________________ On failure: Just do it. If it doesn’t work out, at least you know you tried. ________________________________________________________________________ On resources: I’d say 80% of what I use is recycled…I challenge everyone…I want you to look at your garbage different. Don’t isolate yourself. ________________________________________________________________________ On negativity: Sometimes I need to force myself to take a moment and sit with the sadness or with the fear, and try to work through that. I do a lot of journaling. ________________________________________________________________________ On creativity: If it’s something magical from your imagination, you can’t do it wrong. I think that the coolest thing about it is that- ultimately it’s a piñata. And if you really, really hate it at the end, you just have wait for it to dry, then you can fill it with stuff and smash it. It’s not a big deal. ________________________________________________________________________ On intentions: I’ve always kind of had this way of looking at the positive. Define yourself. I don’t say, I’m a server; I say, I’m a piñata artist. ________________________________________________________________________ On support: Be sure the people around you are supportive and not resentful. I have a select amount of friends because I don’t have time. And I need people around me who don’t mind that I’m not always around. ________________________________________________________________________ On difficult conversations: It’s really easy to be mad at someone. But it’s really hard to go back and be like, hey guys, I was kind of a jerk, and own the stuff. The greatest thing with having a craft in front of you is…we can have those conversations in a more productive way. ________________________________________________________________________ On mantras: Don’t ask for permission, ask for forgiveness. No doesn’t mean never, it means not right now. ________________________________________________________________________ On work ethic: I don’t wait around. If I don’t have orders, I make a bunch of stuff. If you’re putting out excellent, excellent comes back. There’s no denying that. Make sure you really, really, really like it because you’re going to be doing it a lot. ________________________________________________________________________ Keep in touch with Meaghan Kennedy Website – YourPinata.com Social Media –Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @yourpinata
