In nomine Patris, et Fillii, et Spiritus Sancti, we’re shippin’ up to Boston for Troy Duffy’s violent, religious vengeance-fuelled indie action thriller The Boondock Saints.
Joined by our tremendous first-time guest David Biggins, who discovered the film in his later teen years, our panel tackle a film whose creation is almost as famous as the work itself, as the critically acclaimed 2003 documentary Overnight chronicles. A beneficiary of the indie film goldrush of the 1990s, first-time screenwriter Duffy wangled a dream gig as writer, director, and soundtrack artist for his movie with a bumper payday. But, his infamous benefactor Harvey Weinstein cooled on this latest protege due to...personality issues, leaving Duffy to pursue his film at a vastly reduced budget that nonetheless garnered an eventual fervent following on home media.
With two of our panel encountering the film for the first time, but having history with the notorious documentary, and two with nostalgic memories of a genuine cult item, we discuss exploding cats, mad Willem Dafoe, badass Billy Connoly, Celtsploitation, hasty recastings, dodgy ethics, the post-Tarantino movie production landscape, and much more. Join Patrick, Matt, Devlin and David as they strap on an absurd amount of guns and scrawl on some biro hand tattoos to unleash their righteous fury.
