In this episode, we discuss getting ready for the 9th edition of Warhammer 40K. Changing editions is just a reality with this game, so we will look back at our personal history with each edition change. We also talk about what excites us about the new edition and what we plan on doing as we wait for the new edition to launch.
Introduction
Looking back at our past editions, how did they launch and impact us?
5th Edition The ruleset had evolved since 3rd first made it a cleaner game, and 5th was the most polished at that point.
Introduced true line of sight, simplified cover, vehicle damage chart, and wound allocation.
Many players STILL regard it as the best edition of 40K.
6th Edition My first edition, the one I finally started playing games with.
The production values of the game materials increased dramatically.
Many rules were trying to mimic more of a “narrative feel”.Allies opened up a lot more options for army building.
7th Edition A surprise cleanup edition, it tried to fix some of the clunkiness of 6th.
An explosion of codexes and supplements; this was the modern release schedule we see today.
Allies were silly. We talk about soup now, but then?
Needed an ITC FAQ to make it playable at events.
8th Edition A complete change, all new rules for everything.
It was a very hyped edition as we finally heard from GW about it and there were playtesters for the first time.
This is actually unusual; has only wiped the slate clean twice with this game.
But… you see the FAQs, the engagement with the community, you see the game evolve DURING the edition, which never happened before.
9th Edition A cleanup edition, nothing invalidated thankfully. We don’t want to do another round of codex releases!
So what has changed this time? They have been in this ruleset for several years with dedicated playtesters
They have a lot more feedback from the players.
They have expanded their design team; it’s not obvious, but they have more game designers. See interview on Voxcast with Duncan Waugh.
They have learned what they can and can’t do with the rules.
In retrospect, the PA books were designed as previews of additional rules for armies in 9th.
The 12 pages of rules SEEMED amazing at the time, but… it may have been too much to hope for.
What excites us about 9th edition?
The new Warhammer app.
Rules teases sound good, but honestly without the full context is really hard to know if they are “good” or “bad.”
Necron model line refresh is amazing, right down to the warriors. What might this mean for other armies? (Guard and Eldar)
Getting ready for 9th edition
The mechanics appear to be the same, so the mathammer is still the same and the tactics should be the same or close.
The good news is our books are not invalidated, but….
We don’t know how anything will play at this point.
The changes to how we get CP based on the teasers so far mean that how we build armies can change
We don’t know what will be “good” when the edition releases.
There are hints of points changes, but we have no idea what that actually means.
Army inventory; what do I want to keep, what to expand on?
Keep painting the Marines and focus on the core units. Plan on getting the starter box.
NOT buying anything right now.
