Roman Rojas of the Eastside Punks Podcast stopped by Eric Kurimski’s house in New York City to talk for a while and hear him play. Eric is a guitarrist that has spent years perfecting and studying Afro Peruvian music.

Eric Kurimski, is New York’s most sought after guitarist for Afro Peruvian music. He holds a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Jazz from SUNY Purchase and the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York respectively. In 2002 he began intense studies of Afro Peruvian rhythms with the esteemed guitarist, the maestro Carlos Hayre (Carlos has influenced and modernized the advancement of Afro-Peruvian music from the 1940’s through the present day.) Carlos became Eric's professor/ mentor and has proved to be very important to his musical career. Now, fusing his knowledge of Jazz with rhythms of Peru and Latin America, Eric has dedicated himself to defining a new sound integrating the Peruvian Cajon (box) as the principal percussion instrument in a Jazz setting. He has performed in renowned venues throughout the Unites States including, Blue Note, Lincoln Center, Jazz Gallery, BAM, SOB’s, Jazz Bakery, Joe’s Pub, and Regatta Bar. He has also perfromed internationally in Europe, Peru, Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador and Puerto Rico. He has shared the stage or recorded with Joan Baez, Marc Ribot, Eva Ayllon, Oscar Stagnaro, Tania Libertad, John Benitez, Carlos Hayre, Aquiles Baez, Edward Perez, Sofia Rei Koutsovitis, Manuel Donayre, Mariela Valencia and William Luna, Piero, and Guadalupe Pineda. He has been featured in various publications including Guitar Player Magazine, All About Jazz, World Music Central, and Latin Jazz Network. Eric's debut release "Réplica" (Lima Limon Records) recorded in Peru, was voted Best Album of 2008 at Latin Jazz Corner. It features Grammy award winning percussionist Juan Medrano Cotito (Susana Baca Group), bassist Edward Perez (Mark Murphy, Hector Martignon and Jane Bunnett) as well as some of Peru's finest Afro Peruvian musicians; Sergio Valdeos (Susana Baca Group,) Yuri Juarez (Gabriel Alegrias Afro Peruvian Jazz Ensemble,) Charo Goyoneche (Teatro del Milenio) and the unequaled maestro Carlos Hayre. This ground breaking recording mixes traditional Afro Peruvian Music with modern Jazz. Eric has also participated on Sofia Reis Koutsovitis, Manuel Donayre, Mariela Valencia and William Luna, Piero, and Guadalupe Pineda.
